If you really wanna see the best Matheran has to offer without crowds and the non-commercialized part. Forget going all the way to the top to Matheran.
From your vehicle or the shared cab get down at the Peb Fort point. Park your vehicle in a suitable place so that it does not block the traffic.
This is the 134NM marker of the railway tracks. The cab driver will charge you the same amount.
Start walking towards the valley on the rail road i.e. 135NM then 136NM and so on.
The toy train is not operational during monsoon. You need not bother about the incoming train while walking on this rail track.
If you keep walking on this rail track, there are 2 things to do here.
1: At 156 NM, you can go down the Ganesh temple area and start trekking for the Peb fort. Peb fort trek is easy but with caution.
2: Keep walking ahead of marker 156NM and go all the way to Matheran (only if you came by Cab).
You will need to bring your own food and water on this route.
In peak monsoon, enjoy the waterfalls on the route as seen in the below video.
As this rail road becomes a very tempting picnic spot, kindly consider the environment and DO NOT throw any kind of garbage. Carry it along with you. Dispose when you find dustbins.
For people who want to go to Matheran (Neral) by train on popular weekends/long holidays, below are few tips:
1: Dont Go.
2: If you still want to go, while returning, Neral station will be heavily crowded. Instead of catching the train from Neral, go to Karjat. Be ready to stand in crowded train all the way till Thane. This is one reason one must avoid going to Matheran by public transport and on weekends.
3: To be more smart, stay the night and catch the best possible early train you can. Anything after 2pm will be crowded like crazy. The crowd comes all the way from Khopoli/Karjat/Bhivpuri. Your chances to catch the train from Neral is 5%.
